Southeast Psychiatric Treatment Center

Pennsylvania DGS & DHS|Norristown, PA
The Pennsylvania State Department of Human Services allocated funds for the development of a state-of-the-art 420-bed forensic facility on the expansive 225-acre Norristown State Hospital grounds to provide care for individuals involved with the judicial or corrections systems who require psychiatric assessment or treatment. The current campus provides 255-beds distributed across two buildings. The new building's layout is designed around a central hub that houses administrative functions and lobby services, with treatment spaces symmetrically placed on either side. This allows for patient units to extend outward, ensuring they are positioned away from the nearby residential areas surrounding the project site. The interior design takes cues from the adjacent Norristown Farm Park with its picturesque woods and agricultural fields. Partner Firm | Stantec

Trauma-Informed Design
This project is grounded in trauma-informed and dignity-driven principles that will guide the design process. It will feature a medical unit to address patients’ co-morbidities involving both behavioral and physical health needs, ensuring that the facility meets contemporary standards for forensic psychiatric care. This will significantly reduce the waiting time for patients needing admission to the hospital.
