Awosting Hall is one of five residence halls on the Peregrine Quad. After completing a comprehensive residential Master Plan in 2009, architecture+ focused on the plan’s implementation. This included the siting and construction of a new +200-bed residence hall and conceptual design for renovating the five, 200-bed Peregrine Quad residence halls - Ashokan, Shawangunk, Minnewaska, Awosting, and Mohonk. For Awosting’s new residents, the building was more than a housing upgrade; it was also a symbol of the community’s resilience. Prior to its reopening, Awosting had served as the University’s COVID-19 testing site and an isolation space for students recovering from illness.

Design Concept
Our team provided a concept design to modernized the buildings, improve accessibility, and upgrade building systems with similar programmatic elements and a common architectural style but feature a unique identity through entry addition, roof profile, and interior design variations.
With the first two renovations, Ashokan and Shawangunk, successfully completed and the third residence hall, Minnewaska, in design our team and the College explored increasing residence life bed capacity through vertical expansion. We evaluated the building code, structural implications, and budget to determine it was feasible. We proceeded with incorporating the vertical expansion into the remaining two residence halls, Awosting and Mohonk.
Awosting increased its capacity by 79-beds and provided upgrades to enhance the student experience reopening at the end of the fall 2023 semester.

LEED Certified
This is the fifth LEED certified building designed by our firm on the campus and the first to be LEED V4 certified. The design incorporates indigenous plants that will not require irrigation and specifies sustainable building materials.
