The Approach

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Troy, New York

The Approach is a 163-step staircase leading from RPI to the city of Troy. It was completed in 1907 as a memorial to link the campus physically and symbolically with the city. For half a century, this neoclassic structure was used as a means of scaling the hill and as a gathering place for photos and ceremonial events. Although once a source of pride, years of neglect had severely damaged The Approach.

We undertook restoration as a preservation project faithful to the original design. The majority of the existing stonework was painstakingly labeled, disassembled and stockpiled while repairs were made to the substructure. Replica ornamental metalwork and period light poles were replaced. It is once again a place where students and residents gather to celebrate, study and socialize.
