Fine Arts Building Rehabilitation

SUNY Oneonta

Oneonta, New York

The State University Construction Fund engaged architecture+ to complete a program study of the Fine Arts Building for the State University College at Oneonta as part of our Regional Campus Facility Planning Services Term Agreement-East Region.

The Fine Arts Building was constructed in 1968 and houses the Department of Music, Department of Art, and Department of Theatre as well as general classrooms, the campus art gallery, and two campus theatres.

The study was undertaken to determine the scope of renovations and additions, associated construction costs, and schedule for the work. Meetings were held with all participating departments to reach consensus on the scope of the renovations so that the highest priority needs were addressed within a predetermined project budget.

Music Department work will include upgrading existing teaching laboratories, recording studios, classrooms, and offices along with the provision to construct a new 13,000 square foot addition for practice and rehearsal rooms.

Art Department studios will be rearranged to achieve better instructional space and infrastructure will be upgraded to provide safer and better facilities. Two small additions for kilns and a foundry will relocate into a safer location.

Theatre Department dressing rooms, make-up rooms, and a green room will be renovated to better address current needs. A new theater classroom and offices will also be developed.

We developed a project phasing schedule to accommodate the need to remain in operation and to minimize disruption to academic activities that are unable to be relocated.

architecture+ was subsequently selected to provide design and construction administration services for the renovation. Construction was completed in the Spring of 2011.
